Breaking Down the Caste System

One thing we've all learned when studying India is it's unique Caste System. A system literally designed to keep people in their place financially, educationally and more. However, Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos has recently pledged to help create a million jobs in India within the next 5 years! 

 According to the Article:

The announcement came just days after the company made another major commitment: CEO Jeff Bezos, who is visiting India this week, said Wednesday that Amazon would allocate  $1 billion to helping 10 million small and medium-sized businesses around the country get online by 2025.

 "We've seen huge contributions from our employees [and] extraordinary creativity from the small businesses we've partnered with, "Bezos said Friday in a statement. "We're excited about what lies ahead."

Discussion:

 What could this mean for the Caste System? If an American based company is seeking to employ roughly a million jobs, then who's to say anyone can't just sign up? Imagine if an "untouchable" applied and received a job that pays well above the average starting rate in India? Could they potentially move their way up and out of their caste group?

Hmm...it's fun to think about. Could this spark a revolution that no one expected? You tell me...

Elephant Spa Day Retreat !!!

One of which includes the wildlife and more specifically--elephants. 😍 India is home to over 27,000 elephants and roughly 2,500 of them are kept in captivity. Local activist throughout the (impressively large) country finally made headway in their fight for better treatment of captive elephants and after thousands of cases reporting elephant abuse broke out...the government stepped in. As a result, elephants like Akila are brought to a "rejuvenation camp" each year; and, for several weeks, the animals get to relax in a peaceful, six-acre clearing in a forest away from the lime-light.  The camps are referred to as part of an animal welfare initiation program and a costly one, but supporters say that it's worth it.  While on vacation, the elephants are bathed twice a day and fed a nutritious diet...

Re-elected Taiwan President Has A lot to Say

She says that the country is already independent because of their successful democratic system and fairly decent economy. China's response...it doesn't matter.
